Lianna Rice

Ull√Ękut, ullukut, unnukut! Liannauvunga Labradorimuk. Good morning/afternoon/ evening! My name is Lianna and I’m Inuk from Labrador. I am passionate about the well being of Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth of Labrador, mental health and suicide prevention, and the environment.

As the Aboriginal Youth Director at the Labrador Friendship Centre, I am very involved with youth initiatives in Upper Lake Melville. I feel strongly that mental wellness and suicide prevention for all ages can be achieved in many ways, including through cultural continuity, decolonization and reconciliation. I was recently elected as the Treasurer of the National Association of Friendship Centre’s Aboriginal Youth Council where I advocate and represent youth from all Friendship Centres across Canada. On a national and international level I have had the opportunity to advocate and speak for the inclusion of Inuit voices while addressing the issue of Inuit suicide at the Canadian Embassy in New York and United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues and most recently with Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cambridge, Camilla.

As an indigenous person I have a close connection with the land and environment and I have had the opportunity to work on several environmental research projects mainly focusing on biological and aquatic research.

I’m so excited to be a Youth Reconciliation Initiative Team Member! Through delivering workshops on reconciliation to indigenous and non-indigenous youth I know that Labrador youth, my team member, Deseray, and I will all learn so much together throughout our term as a YRI team!

Nakummek- thank you!

Deseray Rich

I joined the YRI team for Labrador because I am passionate about getting youth involved in creating reconciliation. I believe that CRE does amazing work!

I identify as Innu and Inuit. I recently just started learning about my culture and embrace it. Right now i have two jobs, as a support worker and laison at our men’s prison. I always loved helping people and am happy to help people on their healing journey!

I love being a part of the YRI so far and am looking forward to doing more events!
