Avery Velez (they/them) is a queer, trans, mixed Mi’kmaw and Portuguese youth from the Bay of Islands, Newfoundland. Avery is passionate about Land Back, re-learning culture and history, and welcoming Indigenous youth into safe, progressive, and empowering programming. They are also a student pursuing a Master’s in Environmental Policy exploring Mi’kmaq land rights in western Newfoundland and serve as a regional representative on Indigenous Climate Action’s Youth Leadership Council. At CRE, Avery is a Community Engagement Coordinator with the Community Relations and Solidarity department focused on developing partnerships with small, youth-focused organizations and bringing under-represented Indigenous youth into CRE programming.
